In the Oboe tip comparison chart following, the wrap point (5.1mm) is assigned a value of zero. The throat is measured 5mm above that, the belly at 12mm, and the tip at 23mm. 5.1mm is a "typical" wrap point. These measurements have come from Westwind Double Reeds who took measurements for all our tips so we could present accurate comparisons among all the different brands of tips. | Oboe Tips | Tip +23mm | Belly +12mm | Throat +5mm | Wrap 0mm | | Caleb -1 | 6.89 | 6.59 | 5.87 | 5.1 | | Caleb | 6.92 | 6.62 | 5.90 | 5.1 | | Joshua | 6.88 | 6.55 | 5.87 | 5.1 | | Joshua +2 | 6.93 | 6.60 | 5.92 | 5.1 | | Joshua +4 | 6.98 | 6.65 | 5.97 | 5.1 | | Samson +1 | 6.94 | 6.56 | 5.89 | 5.1 | | Samson +3 | 6.99 | 6.61 | 5.94 | 5.1 | | Ruth -2 | 6.95 | 6.62 | 5.86 | 5.1 | | Ruth | 7.0 | 6.67 | 5.91 | 5.1 | | Sara | 6.91 | 6.64 | 5.93 | 5.1 | | | | | | | | Pisoni 1 | 7.0 | 6.2 | 5.6 | 5.1 | | Pisoni 2 | 7.3 | 6.6 | 5.9 | 5.1 | | Pisoni 3 | 7.4 | 6.7 | 5.9 | 5.1 | | | | | | | | rdg -1 | 6.9 | 6.5 | 5.8 | 5.1 | | rdg 1 | 6.9 | 6.6 | 5.9 | 5.1 | | Pfeiffer-Mack | 7.0 | 6.6 | 5.9 | 5.1 | | Brannen X | 7.0 | 6.7 | 6.0 | 5.1 |
The following is taken from Adam Shaper Tips' website: The actual cane dimensions from any shaper tip can be affected by: - Type of tool used to shape the cane (reed knife, industrial single edge razor blade, single edge shaving blade, exacto blade, etc.)
- Whether or not you use an easel before folding cane
- How tightly cane fits between ears of the shapes
- Whether or not you angle over the sides of the tip while shaping
- Type of shaper handle
- Radius of cane
- How long the cane has been soaked
- Type of gouge
- Whether you shape with one ear resting on a table, or hold the ear with your thumb and index finger
It follows from the above that the tip dimensions given are mainly useful as a relative guide to actual cane dimensions, not an absolute one (e.g. taking all the variables into account, shaped cane from a Joshua +4 tip will be wider at the top than shaped cane from a Sara tip.) Wide or Narrow? A wider tip will give you a fatter sound in the bottom of the range while a narrower tip will give you more control in the upper octaves, but there's a world of subtle differences in the middle...and much depends upon your unique requirements.
